Umeå eNews - Nov. 2019

The snow has arrived

Today, Umeå woke up to a bright white landscape, the snow has finally arrived. Some people love it immediately, others are a little bit hesitant and need time to adjust. Some don´t like it at all. But everyone has a relation to it.

It’s the same with the BRT-station that has been up and running since 5 September. A lot of people loved it immediately, it´s innovative light- and soundscape, the swivel pods and the airy space under the 13x6 meter big roof.

Some comments from passengers on the first day of service were: Exciting design, beautiful lights, surrounded by wonderful sounds, cosy leaning pods, fun, super with real-time notifications, I don´t mind waiting for the next bus.

BIGGEST SUCCESS TO DATE

The climate smart bus stop is up and running.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE

To create the operational documents for operation and maintenance.

Solution U5 – Climate smart bus station

A station of being

The bus station with its beautiful design and innovative light- and soundscape adds a great value to both passengers, the public transport system and to the smart city. Umeå municipality has a goal that by 2022 at least 65% of all travels are made by a sustainable transport mode to reduce the city´s CO2 emissions. The bus station contributes to that goal by giving the public transport mode a modern and futuristic touch and give the passengers waiting for the bus a moment to relax and just to be for a while.

Hanging pods which gives the passengers protection against weather and wind. They are also designed to function as a back support, something to lean against. The pods can be turned in any direction by the wind or by choice from the traveller. The position and angle of the pods is important, and not just from the passenger's perspective. They are placed in such a way that the bus station, if necessary, can be ploughed with a snowplough.

The meditative light- and soundscape is connected to a real-time GPS system for the buses. The GPS-system updates data every five seconds. Each bus route has its own colour and sound. Under the roof are three round electronic boards attached who shows data related to the incoming buses; name of end station, bus number and how many minutes left until the bus arrives, of course in the bus routes own designated colours. The light and sound makes the station more available for persons with a visual impairment or hearing loss. Children who cannot read can learn what colour and sound they should wait for to get on to the right bus.

A separation of the waiting- and boarding zone to promote faster boarding, made possible by the light- and soundscape, is not only good for the electric buses but also for the economy of the public transport system.

RUGGEDISED visible at the EU Arctic Forum

The EU Arctic Forum 2019 took place in Umeå 3-4 October, organised by the European Commission, the European External Action Service, and the Government of Sweden. The focus was on international cooperation, climate-environment-ocean nexus, sustainable investments and connectivity in the Arctic. It was a broad range of Arctic stakeholders participating, representing governments, international organisations, civil society, industry, research, indigenous and local communities.

The event took place at Umeå university, in our Smart city district in Umeå, so of course RUGGEDISED had to be visible at this event! We did that by using a touch screen showing a map over our Smart city district where all nine solutions are presented in 3D. An interactive way to tell participants more about Umeå’s smart solutions in the RUGGEDISED project.

Gdansk visited Umeå

The Fellow City Gdansk visited Umeå 21-23 October. A visit with the purpose to benefit from Umeå’s useful experiences as a Smart City Lighthouse. For example, how Umeå maintain the roads for both bikes and cars, and how the electric bus fleet load at end stations. The visitors from Gdansk had a lot of engaged questions so it was a visit that was mutually rewarding!
