Teaching cases from RUGGEDISED

The RUGGEDISED partners have worked across borders, organisations and thematic fields to develop more sustainable cities using smart city methods. The experiences have been captured by experts from Erasmus University and made available for free for teachers and students to benefit.

Teaching Case: Digital City Rotterdam: Open Urban Platform

The case presents the opportunities and challenges facing the City of Rotterdam in the Netherlands surrounding the introduction of an open urban platform (OUP). It devotes particular attention to the issues of platform purpose, platform governance, financing, trust, and citizen engagement - all of which influence the adoption of OUP by city management and the possibilities for innovation in the city of Rotterdam. This case is part of the RSM free case collection (visit www.thecasecentre.org/rsmfreecases for more information on the collection).

The case is freely available here.

Teaching Case: Toward an Energy Transition in Rotterdam: Smart Thermal Grid Initiatives

The case presents the complexity and challenges of realising the benefits of Smart Thermal Grids (STG) in the Hart van Zuid (Heart of the South Side) district of Rotterdam. Hart van Zuid is the pilot area of the RUGGEDISED project, where different Smart Thermal Grid solutions are being developed and implemented. These STG initiatives aim to demonstrate that energy from renewable sources (eg, aquathermal energy) and back-up (aquifer thermal energy storage) can be shared between a range of buildings for heating and cooling purposes in the city. This case is part of the RSM free case collection (visit www.thecasecentre.org/rsmfreecases for more information on the collection).
